SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD DEVELOPMENT
TO JAVVADHU HILL TRIBES
Sri. Rishikesh Pondey, Secretary, Schedeuled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Department, Government of India and Smt. Kannagi Bagyanathan, the Secretary, Department of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes and Sri.Kannappan, the District Forest Officer visited our Tribal Development Fund Project village, Alanjanur in Javvadhu Hills of Eastern Ghats in Thiruvannamalai District, on 21.11.2014, and requested the officials to take necessary action to expand the area under sericulture, and bring needed infrastructurefacilities to bring sustainable Livelihood Development for the tribal people.
VISIT BY THE SECRETARIES OF GOVT. OF INDIA & GOVT. OF TAMILNADU
TO NABARD'S TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT FUND PROJECT VILLAGE
The secretaries of Govt. of India and Govt, of Tamilnadu arrived Alanjanur the Tribal Development Fund project village, in the afternoon along with a team of officials of Sericulture Department and Forest Department. They had visited Sri.Venkatesan's Silk Worm Rearing shed. The shed was filled with the White Silk Worm Cocoons of 50 layings, ready for harvest. The Netrikas (the latest device used for spinning of cocoons) to carrying the un-harvested Cocoons and a sample harvested Cocoons were shown to them.
VENKATESAN, THE TRBAL SILK FARMER
The secretary had a brief discussion with Sri.Venkatesan, the Silk Farmer of our Tribal Development Project, Alanjanur, said the following.
"I have raised only half an acre of Mulberry at the beginning. I was impressed by the income I got. Now I have enhanced the Mulberry area to one acre. From now onwards I could get monthly income regularly"
Then the secretary turned down to the Sericulture Department officials.
SERICULTURE DEPARTMENT
A team of Sericulture Department officials, Sri. Abdul Faruk, Technical Asst. Thiruvannamalai, Sri.K.S.Mohan, Junior Inspector, Kadaladi, Sri.M.Murugan, Asst. Inspector,Jamnamarathur and Sri.Arockiasamy, Junior Inspector, Pattaraikkadu were also present, in the venue and explained about the feasibility of expanding Sericulture area and also bringing the other infrastructure facilities in Javvadhu Hills.
"BHUMII is implementing Nabard's Tribal Development Project in this area. The department of Sericulture is providing the subsidy support to the project beneficiaries. The project is supporting 110 tribal families. The project helps to construct the Scientific Silk Worm Rearing sheds. The size of of shed is 714 sq.ft. Now the project has opened an opportunity to earn an average income of Rs.10000 in 25 days. The highest income recorded is Rs.30000/ per harvest in 25 days. Sericulture proved here as better livelihood option for the tribals of Javvadhu hills. The department of Sericulture is supplying layings, Chakkies and technical know-how to our project beneficiaries. Now Nabard has sanctioned its second project to extend the benefit to another 100 families in Javvadhu Hills. The area and the climate is conducive for further expansion too."

Before leaving the Alanjanur village the Secretary requested the Sericulture and Tribal Development Department to take necessary action to increase Sericulture area and infrastructure facilities to produce Silk Worm Eggs, Chakkies, and Reeling units. In further he said, Sericulture will bring sustainable development in the life of Javvadhu Hill tribes.
Later on Sri.D.Gnana Suria Bahavan, Director, BHUMII Trust thanked the Secretaries, for having visited the TDF project village in Javvadhu Hills.
